The Novel Quantum and Applied Materials Laboratory

The Novel Quantum and Applied Materials Laboratory (NQAML) is located within the School of Physics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our research focuses on the synthesis, analysis, and exploration of novel quantum materials. With a passion for pushing the boundaries of physics, we strive to discover and explore materials that possess exotic ground states and exhibit application-oriented properties.

The landscape of our research is the world of quantum materials - materials where electron-electron correlations are highly non-trivial and often lead to fascinating collective phenomena like quantum phase transitions, unconventional superconductivity, magnetism, magnetic excitations, and novel ground states. Our primary undertakings lie in synthesizing novel and/or unexplored compounds with structures favorable to exotic ground states as well as interesting electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. We typically synthesize and explore materials in single-crystal form, which allows us to observe and analyze the material's anisotropy thereby enhancing our understanding of the compounds fundamental nature.

Driven by passion and curiosity, our diverse team combines knowledge from various disciplines, including physics, chemistry, and materials science. This interdisciplinary approach fosters a collaborative environment, where ideas and perspectives converge to fuel knowledge creation. With a shared vision, we strive to drive advancements in our field of research and contribute to the global scientific community in as many ways as we can.

In addition to our research endeavors, we are committed to fostering knowledge dissemination and nurturing the next generation of scientists. We actively engage in academic collaborations, organize seminars and colloquiems, and mentor aspiring researchers, aiming to cultivate a vibrant scientific ecosystem and inspire young minds to explore the fascinating world of condensed matter physics.

We invite you to explore our website and discover more about our ongoing projects, publications, and the achievements of our team. In addition, we are always on the the lookout for new students and post-docs to join us on our journey exploring the unknown. Welcome to the Novel Quantum and Applied Materials Laboratory.
